About Cairn

A quiet place to sort what matters

Cairn exists to make retirement record-keeping less overwhelming — one document, one folder, one clear step at a time.

Our Story

How Cairn came to be

Cairn opened in Phuket after its founders noticed a gap that was, in its own modest way, causing real difficulty. Many people — retirees, long-term expatriates, spouses trying to sort a partner's papers — were sitting on shoeboxes of documents with no clear sense of what they had, what they were missing, or who to call. The information existed; finding a way through it did not come as naturally.

The name was chosen deliberately. A cairn is a stack of stones used to mark a path in uncertain terrain — a simple, human way of saying "this way." That is exactly what the service is meant to do: not to carry people to their destination, but to mark out the path so they can walk it themselves with confidence.

We operate from a small reading-room style office on Chao Fa Road in Muang Phuket. Sessions are one-to-one or with a partner. Nothing is rushed. The work is methodical: sorting, labelling, summarising, and pointing toward official channels. When a client leaves, they carry everything out with them — tidier, referenced, and accompanied by a written summary of the next steps that are theirs to take.

Cairn is not a financial advisory service. It is not a legal service. It does not represent clients before any government body or pension scheme. What it offers is patience, order, and plain-language orientation — the kind of grounded help that is quietly useful and almost always underestimated.

Mission & Values

What guides our work

Honest scope

We are clear about what we do and what we do not do. There is no grey area in our role — information and organisation, nothing beyond that.

Client ownership

Every document, every decision, every next step belongs to the person we are helping. Our job is to support, not to manage on someone else's behalf.

Unhurried pace

Retirement planning touches on things that matter deeply. We do not rush sessions or stack appointments. Time is given freely so thinking can happen clearly.

Discretion by default

Personal documents are personal. We handle all paperwork with care, store only what is strictly required for appointment management, and share nothing with third parties.

Plain language always

Official documents and pension communications are often written to satisfy regulators, not readers. We translate the substance into language that does its job.

Locally rooted

Phuket is home to a significant retiree population from many countries. We know the embassies, consular desks, and helplines that matter here, and we keep that knowledge current.

The Team

The people behind Cairn

MW

Martin Whitaker

Founder & Lead Organiser

Spent over a decade supporting expatriate communities in Southeast Asia before founding Cairn. Holds a certificate in information management and a calm disposition that clients frequently mention.

SR

Sunisa Rattana

Client Liaison & Session Coordinator

Manages bookings and ensures every client arrives knowing what to bring and what to expect. Fluent in English and Thai, she bridges the practical gap between our office and the local government offices clients may later contact.

PD

Patricia Devereux

Reference & Signpost Researcher

Maintains Cairn's directory of official pension contacts, embassy desks, and public helplines across more than a dozen countries. Keeps every listing current so clients receive accurate directions, not outdated ones.

Our Standards

How we keep our work reliable

Data handled with care

Appointment records are kept only as long as necessary. No client documents are photographed, scanned, or stored by Cairn without written consent. We comply with Thai Personal Data Protection Act requirements.

Scope reviewed each session

At the start of every appointment, our organiser confirms with the client what the session covers and what it does not. This keeps expectations precise and the work properly bounded.

Reference directory updated quarterly

Our signpost directory of official contacts is reviewed every three months. Pension agencies, consular sections, and government helplines change their contact details more often than people realise.

Post-session summary provided

Every client receives a brief written summary of what was covered, what was organised, and the specific offices or helplines identified as relevant. Clear, printed, and yours to keep.

No conflicts of interest

Cairn does not receive referral fees from financial services firms, law practices, or any other professional service. We do not benefit from directing clients toward any particular provider.

Always directed to official channels

When a question falls outside our scope, we say so and point clearly toward the body that can answer it — a government agency, a pension scheme, or a regulated professional depending on the topic.

Our Expertise

Document organisation and retirement information in southern Thailand

Phuket and the broader southern Thai region are home to a large and varied community of retirees. People arrive with pension arrangements structured in dozens of different countries — state pensions, occupational schemes, personal plans, and combinations of all three. Each one comes with its own documentation, its own claim process, and its own set of official contacts that can, over time, become genuinely hard to keep track of.

Cairn works with people at precisely that stage: when the papers exist but the order does not, when the system is understood in outline but not in detail, and when the next practical step — writing to a pension body, visiting a consulate, submitting an annual residency declaration — feels harder than it should because the groundwork has not yet been laid.

Our sessions are structured around the documents you bring. We work through them together, label them plainly, group them logically, and note what appears to be missing. Where a document points toward a body you should contact, we identify that body and include it in the written summary you take home. The framework session covers how pension and retirement arrangements are generally built — the vocabulary, the structure, the standard documents and what they signify — so that when you do approach an official channel, the conversation is a more productive one.

The Complete Organise-and-Signpost Programme brings both elements together into a single, thorough session designed for those who want to leave with everything in order in one visit. It suits people who have accumulated a considerable set of papers, those approaching a significant milestone such as first pension claim, or those whose family circumstances make having a complete and legible record particularly important.

Throughout, the work belongs to you. Cairn marks the path; you walk it.
